The inargural A1 season ran from autumn 2005 to spring 2006 and was held at 10 venues around the world. This new format, dubbed the 'World Cup' of motor-racing is a new concept bankrolled by Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum with management based in Londona nd South Africa, the competition is designed around national teams, each using a uniform car, rather than individual teams with large budget development.
A total of 25 country teams took part in the inargural competition, reputedly representing the interests of 80 per cent of the world's population. The format consists of a sprint event, in which the best two times recorded in an open 20 minute session on the track count for points and grid positions for the main race.
In the 2005/2006 season Team France were the runaway winners with 172 points, wrapping up the championship before several of the last races were completed. Team Switzerland followed on 121, with Team Great Britain, New Zealand and Malaysia taking third, fourth and fifth respectively.
