Results of the 2005 A1 Grand Prix of Nations, EuroSpeedway, Germany
34,000 fans showed up at the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz, Germany to watch the second A1 Grand Prix race of the season. Fans got an incident-packed and exciting race, where France’s driver Nicolas Lapierre won both the Sprint Race and Main Race events, to take home 20 points for his country. He was followed by Great Britain, driver Robbie Kerr, and then Canada. However, the fastest lap bonus point went to Brazil, but their driver, Nelson Piquet Jr., who finished third in the Sprint Race, spun out of the main race.
There were several incidents during the race. At the start-line problems arose when one of the technicians of the Brazilian team was still on the track when the race was about to start, forcing Johnny Reid of New Zealand, to abort his start. The race was quickly re-started, but reduced by one lap. The safety car was called out after India’s car stalled on the start/finish straight and had to be towed away. As in F1, when the safety car is out on the track, drivers are not allowed any overtaking maneuvers and need to slow down. Malaysia received a drive through penalty overtaking during this period. However, Malaysia was not the only team to penalised during the race, with the Czech Republic and Brazil also receiving a drive through penalties, one for jump starting their car and one for a pit stop infringement. Teams USA, Great Britain and the Netherlands all crashed out of the race.
Lebanon's driver, Khalil Beschir, already infamous for his spectacular crash at the inaugural race in Brands Hatch, finished 18th despite technical difficulties, forcing him to make an extra pit stop. Several teams, including Lebanon, have encountered wheel nut problems during the pit stops and this is something that A1 organisers will be looking into prior to the next race in Portugal.
The top three teams, Brazil, France and New Zealand, are all neck-on-neck, with a twelve point gap arising between third place New Zealand and fourth place Switzerland. So far, New Zealand has been the only team that has managed to finish all four races of the season.
This puts the country point standing as follows, after the second race of the season (SR= Sprint Race; MR = Main Race; FL = Fastest lap bonus point):
