2005 F1 Grand Prix archives
The 2005 season provided and upset and new champion for the first time in five years as Renault dominated the early season in the absence of a reliable an on-pace Ferrari and Michael Schumacher.
In the end Schumacher would take the chequered flag once, at the ill-fated and controversial US Grand Prix where all but six cars withdrew over safety concerns with their Michelin tyres. It was a low point in F1 and unfortunately the teams and organisers we unable to show enough flexibility for a compromise. The controversy went on for weeks with threat of splits between the organisers - insisting on disciplinary action, and a consortium of teams talking about a break away in 2008.
Fernando Alonso went on to become the youngest champion in the history of F1, and Renault won the Constructors' Championship despite a late charge from McLaren who ironically won 10 races to Renault's eight - but their poor start to the season hampered their efforts
Kimi Räikkönen eventually finished 19 points adrift while defending champion Schumacher saw an end to his long reign, coming a distant third. 2005 was not as successful for Jenson Button who finished 9th this year while the Toyota drivers and team had their best ever season.
In a season dominated by cost cutting measures and no tyre changes, F1 took on a whole new perspective and more excitement. Renault only just won the Constructors' Championship with a 9 point lead over McLaren, after they suffered retirements on the last race, while Ferrari found them in an unfamiliar third place and Toyota surprised everyone with a fourth place.
