Lewis Hamilton returned to his winning ways in a hollow victory for McLaren at the hot and dusty Hungaroring. Gifted pole after his teammate Fernando Alonso was demoted five starting places, the rising British star lead from the start but was always under pressure from Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari who finished less than a second behind him.
Meanwhile, as the Finn was challenging in the closing stages, Nick Heidfeld was desperately holding off third from a charging Alonso, who finished fourth and thus conceded a further five points to Hamilton in the drivers' Championship. However, McLaren, as a team, scored no points in the Constructors' Champions as part of a penalty for Alonso's apparent pit stop hold up in qualifying which denied Hamilton one final lap.
Fortunately for McLaren - on a circuit that is notoriously difficult to pass on and in searing heat that left few tyre strategy options - the other Ferrari of Felipe Massa finished well down the order in 14 th , having suffered in qualifying due to a mix up in fuel levels. This means the Prancing Stallions only managed to gain eight valuable points in catching their rivals for the Constructors' lead.
Most of the race was processionary, with Ralph Schumacher one of the few losers, throwing away a potential fourth place to eventually come in sixth behind Robert Kubica, while Nico Rosberg in the Williams and Heikki Kovalainen in the Renault finished seventh and eight respectively. Jenson Button, was one of four retirements in a race that saw no major collisions or first corner altercations.
The biggest factor, or non-factor, was the tyre choice. With track temperatures in excess of 40 Celsius, the mandatory use of soft compound tyres was reserved by most teams until near the end of the race to avoid racing on deteriorating rubber. But it did mean at least two or even three pit stops for most. This helped catapult Alonso up the order after being trapped behind slower cars, but prevented the likes of Massa and Fisichella from racing a single stop strategy. Thus Ferrari's best chance all season to catch McLaren was diminished.
McLaren still have a clear advantage, leading the constructors' table by 19, while Ferrari are well ahead of BMW Sauber with 119. In the drivers' log Hamilton enjoys a seven point lead over Alonso who is on 73. Kimi Raikkonen is now third for the first time in this season, a point ahead of Massa on 60.
