Results of the 2008 European F1 Grand Prix.
On a brand new circuit, under floodlights for the first time, it was Felipe Massa's moment, as he drove an impeccable race to make up for the lost victory three weeks earlier. Lewis Hamilton retained his Championship lead by finishing second, and Robert Kubica was back on the podium after a series of disappointing races.
McLaren had the better of the race however, with Heikki Kovailan finishing fourth, while Ferrari's Finn, Kimi Raikkonen, retired late in the race while duelling with his fellow countryman. It really wasn't Ferrari's day, after another messy pitstop with Raikkonen's car injuring one of their mechanics as it departed with the fuel hose partially attached. And it could have been worse after Massa survived a steward's enquiry for obstruction when exiting his pitstop.
Meanwhile, Jarno Trulli came home in fifth for another pleasing Toyota result, followed by the season's best rookie Sebatien Vettel for Torro Rosso. Timo Glock also scored points for Toyota ahead of Nico Rosberg in the Williams. BMW's Nick Heidfeld unusually finished just outside of the points.
Apart from the dramatic engine blow up for Raikkonen on lap 45 it was largely an uneventful race with the top three order unchanged throughout the race from pole to chequered flag. But for the Spanish fans it was disappointment from lap one when local hero Fernando Alonso had to retired following a collision at the start with Adrian Sutil.
Although Hamilton was never in a position to truly challenge Massa, he was not outclassed either and the McLarens now seem to have the upper hand on the suspect Ferrari engines. They have further closed the gap in the constructors' points to just eight, when three races ago their were in third and 20 points adrift. Hamilton meanwhile has extended his lead to seven points and his nearest rival is now Massa, with reigning champion Raikkonen 13 points adrift of the leader.
