Results of the 2009 Italian F1 Grand Prix.
Under the glare of spotlights Lewis Hamilton comfortably won the second F1 night race on this bumpy street circuit, finishing 12 seconds ahead of Timo Glock who gave Toyota their best result of the season. Fernando Alonso, distracted by the 'crashgate' scandal from his Renault team at this very circuit, jockeyed for the final podium place in the knowledge he will be moving to Ferrari next year.
Sebastian Vettel might well have been spraying the champaign had he not erred in the pit lane, earning a drive through penalty for speeding, and managing only fourth place. It put him just one point ahead of Jenson Button and two ahead of rival Barrichello, dampening his hopes of overhauling their drivers' title lead.
Heikki Kovailanen and Robert Kubica picked up the last of the points as Mark Webber again retired despite starting fourth, killing his chances of challenging for the title. But perhaps the biggest loser was poor Nico Rosberg who jumped Vettel at the start for second but then landed a drive through penalty for crossing the white line in his first pit stop. He eventually finished 14th.
The safety car was deployed shortly after, following an accident between Sutil and Heidfeld, but pole-sitter Hamilton was never under threat as his usual rivals were bottled up in the field, with Raikkonen, Button and Barrichello ninth and beyond. As the race played out the two Brawns were lucky to gain ground on the Red Bulls, but the Ferraris had an unimpressive race.
There was little overtaking on this narrow circuit, and the drivers were spared any monsoon downpours. Ultimately the Brawn drivers came away the most satisfied, as Button now leads his team-mate by 15 points going into the last three races. Vettel has only a mathematical chance of closing his 25 point deficit and winning the title, and Red Bull Racing would virtually need their rivals to retired from every remaining race to land the 43 point advantage needed to take the Constructors' trophy.
