Brawn did it again with a one-two that gave Jenson Button his fouth victory of the season, finishing well ahead of Rubens Barichello. The team’s nearest rivals, Red Bull, finished third and fourth as Mark Webber grabbed a place on the podium from a well timed pit strategy, and Sebastian Vettel gained fourth despite starting second.
For Ferrari and McLaren it was another forgettable finish, and although Felipe Massa scored his first points of the season he slipped from fourth to sixth in the dying laps as his car lost pace. Fifth therefore went to homeboy Fernando Alonso, and Nick Heidfeld grabbed seventh. Nico Rosberg picked up the last of the points.
The uneventful race, competed in good weather for a change, saw Barrichello snatch the lead from the first corner, while Vettel slipped to fourth. This benefitted Button who had a light fuel load and pitted early but managed to regain the lead, which he never lost.
There was however a spectacular crash at the first corner as Jarno Trulli’s car created a mass collision that took out both the Torro Rossos, along with Adrian Sutil.
The two Finns, Kimi Raikkonen and Heikki Kovalainen failed to finish for their high flying teams, both of which continue to struggle for pace. Britain’s current World Champion Lewis Hamilton barely missed out on points too, compounding his miserable season.
Jenson Button consolidates his lead in the Drivers’ Championship on 41, well ahead of teammate Rubens Barichello who has 27. Their nearest rivals are the two Red Bull Drivers Sebatian Vettel and Mark Webber on 23 and 15.5 respectively, while Toyota’s Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock aren’t far behind. Reigning champ Lewis Hamilton has just 9, while Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen languish on 3 each. In the Constructors’ Champs, Brawn are well ahead on 68, with Red Bull trailing on 38.5 and Toyota on 26 and McLaren on 13 - some catching up to do.
