Getting to and from the British Grand Prix Circuit
The original thinking behind using Silverstone as the British Grand Prix circuit was its central location, easily reached from London, as well as the Midlands. The Silverstone circuit is located about 115km (72mi) north of London. However, the circuit is not well served by public transportation, making driving the easiest solution.
The circuit is most easily accessed by car. Silverstone lies on the A43 highway, between Towcester and Brackley and is signposted from the M1 motorway junction 15A (roughly 15 minutes from the junction) or M40 motorway junction 10 (roughly 20 minutes from the junction). Having said that, parking has improved at the circuit, but can still be a nightmare at Silverstone, since almost everyone will be driving. Parking tickets for the weekend race can also be quite pricey. Camping options are also available, but are not cheap.
The closest airports serving Silverstone are London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted and Birmingham International. Heathrow is the closest international airport and is roughly 110km (69mi) from the circuit. It is easy to rent a car from all the airports and access to Silverstone by car is easy. However, there is also public bus and rail links to the Silverstone area. For those with money to burn, there are regular helicopter shuttles from London to Northampton, especially on Grand Prix weekends.
There two main railway stations near Silverstone; Northampton and Milton Keynes. Northampton is about 33km (20mi) away from the circuit and Milton Keynes a little closer. However, there is no public transportation from there to the circuit, making cabs the only option.
There are buses and private coach services from London, but they need to be booked in advance and can only take you as far as Northampton, Milton Keynes or Oxford. From there taxi is the only option to the track. Every year, there is also a special British Formula One Grand Prix race day coach transfer from junctions for the M40 and M1 motorways.
