A guide to the Monaco Grand Prix Circuit
Amazingly, there have been very few changes to the Monte Carlo circuit over the years the F1 Grand Prix has been run in Monaco. Every year, there are some small changes, but the circuit has basically retained its essence. By drivers, it is known as a slow circuit, but one that is demanding on both car and driver.
The track has many tight corners and walls, which require technical skill and precision, there is little room for error on this circuit. This is what makes this track so fascinating for spectators. The race being run on regular roads gives it that distinct flavor, but if you stand at the Loews hairpin, which is the slowest corner in the F1 Championships, you can literally see the concentration on the faces of the drivers, as they maneuver their hi-tech cars slowly and skillfully around this corner - just incredible!
Monte Carlo is of course famous for its harbour area, where among other things the rich and famous park their yachts. However, the harbour is also infamous for the F1 race, where two drivers to date have plunged their cars in for a swim: Alberto Ascari in 1955 and Paul Hawkins in 1965. In neither case was the driver badly hurt, but it was great for the spectators!
The Principality of Monaco is only one square mile in size, so it is difficult to get lost. The F1 race is run on the streets of Monte Carlo and really cannot be missed, and amenities are plenty for the visitor. The Principality takes pride in hosting the F1 Grand Prix and the race is always extremely well organised, catering to almost every spectator's need. The city offers plenty of beautiful casinos (for entry make sure you have your passport and are appropriately dressed), historic sites, many boutiques and excellent restaurants on offer.
Monaco hosts an array of events throughout the year, apart from the F1 Grand Prix. The other famous motor race, is of course the Monte Carlo Rallye, which has been held in January every year, since 1911. Other events include the Primo Sailing Cup, Monte Carlo Tennis Open, the Off-shore Grand Prix boat race, the Herculis International Athletics Meeting and many more events.
