Manor Marussia F1 Racing Team 2015

History in F1

Formerly, Team Virgin Racing, the team was a new-comer to F1 in 2010, sponsored by Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. The team was originally formed as team Manor Grand Prix in 2009 by Manor Motorsport and Wirth Research, but when Virgin bought an 80% stake of the team in 2009, the name was changed to Team Virgin Racing. In 2010, Russian car maker, Marussia, bought a controlling stake in the team, changing the name to Marussia Virgin Racing. In 2011, primarily due to the disappointing season, Wirth Research exited the partnership and the team added McLaren Applied Technologies to its partnership. In 2012, the team changed its name to Marussia Racing. The team continues to disappoint, finishing with zero points in 2012 and 2013 and with two points in 2013. In 2014, the team faced financial difficulties and was unable to race the last three races of the season. The team went with two new, rookie drivers in 2013, which did not change their situation and for 2014 the team kept its driver line-up, but this didn’t change things either. The 2015 Season will see two new drivers joining the team, Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi. Jules Bianchi was involved in a terrible freak accident at the Japanese Grand Prix and suffered a head injury and remains in a coma.

Team Virgin Racing had a rocky start in 2010 and did not fare much better in 2011, 2012 and 2013, ending up at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship table, with zero points. In 2014, the best finish was 9th by Jules Bianchi, which gave the team two points. The team had fewer technical problems, but faced financial difficulties and were unable to even start the last three races of the season. Many believed that was the end of the team, but Manor Racing stepped up to infuse money into the team and race again in 2015, as Manor Marussia Racing.
